Pavonis History:
To date, three
Federation starships have borne the name Pavonis over a period
of nearly 150 years. Named for the geological formation on the
planet Mars, the most recent ship of the line is a Galaxy-class
starship launched in 2377. It is currently under the command of
Captain Cody Williams.
Pavonis Mons
rests east of Olympus Mons and Amazonis Planitia in the southern
hemisphere of Mars. With the human colonization of the planet,
Pavonis Mons took on new importance after the discovery of
dilithium crystals deep within the dormant volcano, and a mine
was established in 2147. These crystals helped power some of the
earliest of warp-capable starships and eventually the city of
Pavonis was established at the base of the mountain. The city of
Pavonis quickly became one of the major population centers on
the planet and still remains so even into the 24th Century.
While the mines are now inactive with the discovery of dilithium
crystal recrystallization, the city continues to prosper as a
major industrial centre and the mines have been preserved as a
national park.
Launched on
April 9, 2249 the Miranda-class U.S.S. Pavonis NCC-1723 left
Starfleet's Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards bound for the Romulan
Neutral Zone to enforce treaty stipulations. Serving in numerous
confrontations with both the Klingons and Romulans, the ship
eventually returned to Utopia Planitia in 2270 to undergo a
major refit. The Pavonis once again returned to patrol the
Neutral Zone and later to render aid in the first Federation
convoy to enter Klingon space after the Khitomer Conference of
2293. She was decommissioned in 2299 after sustaining
significant damage while studying a still unknown stellar
phenomena rumoured to actually have been caused by a Romulan
experiment of some sort.
